Swimming and water safety

All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.

In particular, pupils should be taught to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

At the end of Key Stage 2 (2017/18), 73% of the children achieved the end of year expectations for swimming.

At the end of Key Stage 2 (2018/19), 47% of the children achieved the end of year expectations for swimming.

No swimming assessment data for 2019/2020 and 2020/2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

At the end of Key Stage 2 (2021/2022) 81% of the children achieved the end-of-year expectations for swimming.
